Objective: to be at the point where your alpha-prototype is designed on paper and ready to be manufactured.

Assignment: Complete the mechanical drawings for your product. This should include:

  1. A drawing for each part.  All dimensions and tolerances need to be included. The material needs to be noted.  Any special processing should be noted. Indicate the group member who drew the “part” and the group member who made the “drawing.” Include a signature block for approval.
  2. One assembly drawing of the entire product
a. Any special assembly notes should be included. b. Indicate the group member who drew the “part” and the group member who made the “drawing.” c. Include a signature block for approval.
  1. Assembly drawings of major components
a. Any special assembly notes should be included. b. Indicate the group member who drew the “part” and the group member who made the “drawing.” c. You need to include a signature block for approval.
  1. A Bill of Materials
a. Each part should have an item number with a reference to the assembly drawing b. Part number (internal or external if buying from an outside source) c. Quantity d. Name e. Material f. Source (e.g. machine shop, McMaster-Carr, XXX Company, etc.) Each team will present their drawings for review and comments during the following assigned times. Be prepared to answer any questions regarding your design. Expect detailed questions.

Assigned Times T.B.D.

Grading Criteria You will be graded on the completeness of your drawings, proper tolerancing, proper formatting, and you ability to back up your design decisions. Accuracy and preciseness counts!

Helpful Hints

  • One of the biggest mistakes made by young engineers, which is also easy to correct, is crossing dimension lines with each other or with part drawing lines. Strive for clarity!
  • Break down the task. If you have been busy making the parts, have other people in your group make the
drawings. Don’t worry if the part changes, the drawing will be automatically updated in the software.

  • Have one person create a “format” for the drawings that contains the necessary information. Using ProE?, just click File; New; Format to create your own custom format.
  • You might get questions regarding part count,
