Critical Function Science Fair - Due  in Lecture Week 11 - Meet in 141

Overview

Each group will set up a display in RE-141.  Feel free to use poster boards, monitors, whatever you like.  Everybody will have a chance to move around and see everybody else's project.

At this point in the class your group, with input from Prof. Spenko, should have narrowed your project down to a single product. The main focus of your presentation should be the critical function model or "mockup model" of your product. A mockup model is a working model of your product that does not necessarily look like the final product. The mockup model is essentially an experiment whose purpose is to demonstrate that the key features or your product work. It is not just a more detailed sketch model.

Grading

You will be graded on the following:
  • Have you properly assessed the most critical feature?
  • Have you demonstrated that the critical feature works?
  • Does it work repeatedly (i.e. quality)?
  • Have you addressed user interaction issues (i.e. if a person is going to use it, it should at least be close to the proper size and shape).
  • Clear presentation
Grading Criteria: The focus on this grade is definitely the mockup model. Presentation quality will probably only affect your grade +/- 1 point.
  • 9.0 = A+ Absolutely blows me away. Mockup model clearly demonstrates critical function, perhaps some secondary functions. Clear path to the final alpha prototype. Clearly describing what you have learned from the past two weeks. Grade is rarely given.
  • 8.0 = A, Clearly have learned something from the model. Good craftsmanship on the model. Presentation is clear, concise, and interesting.
  • 7.0 = A-,
  • 6.0 = B, Good work. Presentation is solid, mockup model proves a go situation, but something is lacking. Perhaps you didn't go into detail about the critical function
  • 5.0 = B-,
  • 4.0 = C, Did not identify critical function or model does not demonstrate one way or another if the model gives a go or no-go evaluation. If your results say, yes demonstrates that this should work, then you didn't go deep enough. I am looking for a definite yes or no. Realize that a no-go situation is acceptable, but you should have at least come to me in the week before to discuss it in detail.
  • 3.0 = C-,
  • 2.0 = D, Lack of effort. Mockup model is not convincing one way or the other. Presentation is bad.
  • 1.0 = D-,
  • 0.0 = F, No show.
